Vaasthu Purusha
Those who have spent days agonizing over unavailable finances, irregular workforce, the hurdles of getting wood, cement and steel, know the kind of obstacle race that constructing a house entails. We have often heard
people throw up their arms in despair and say “what inauspicious moment was it that I started this project?” To avoid these regrets it is advisable to start the work on an auspicious day, at an auspicious moment.
The concept of “Vaasthu Purusha” dates back to the Puranas. The story goes thus : When the battle between the gods and demons was going on, a Rakshasa or demon was born who became very powerful and began to harass the Gods. The Gods then joined forces, pushed him into the under world (pathala) and sat on him. He then worshipped Lord Brahma, who was pleased with him, and granted a boon. Brahma named him “Vaasthu Purusha’ and ordained that any project on earth would prosper only if Vaasthu Purusha was appeased with prayers.
Hence, It has become a tradition, to worship Vaasthu Purusha at the commencement of construction of the building at the time of “Shanku Stapana”. He is worshipped again when the main doorway is placed. At the time of Griha Pravesha or house warming, obeisance is again paid to Vaasthu Purusha.
The Vaasthu Purusha is said to reside in a house thus built and says ‘So be it’ (Thathastu). The elders of the house often caution the inmates never to speak of evil things as the Vaasthu Purusha may say ” So be it”. This was probably a method to train youngsters to keep a check on their uttarances.
According to Paramashayi tradition of Vaasthu shasthra, Vaasthu Purusha is worshipped in the following manner. 81 (eigty one) squares are drawn and each square has a colour.
