- Symbol of the sign; the Twins
- Planetary ruler: Mercury
- Birthstone: Agate
- Best day: Wednesday
- Element: Air
- Type: Mutable
As a native of the mutable (changeable) Air Sign Gemini, your goal is to be as free as air—free, especially, from dreary routine, and the need to do the same repeti¬tious chores day after day. You are not a patient plugger like Taurus, or one who rushes in where angels fear to tread, like Aries. Instead, you believe in doing things in the easiest, most comfortable, most enjoyable way, and if there is no easy, comfortable, enjoyable way you will invent one.
That's why your Sign is known as the sign of the inventor.Another characteristic of air signs is the need and the desire to communicate. This is especially true of you, since your ruling planet, Mercury, was known in mythology as the "messenger of the gods." Many writers were bom under this sign—Dante, Ralph Waldo Emer¬son, and Walt Whitman, to name a few. Less exception¬al Gemini people often work on newspapers or in some agency dealing with communication, like the post office. But whatever your regular job, you will almost always want to write as a hobby or a sideline.
If you are a typical Gemini you talk a lot—sometimes too much—but usually nobody minds because your quick and clever wit makes your conversation fascinating. You are also an excellent correspondent whose letters are a source of delight to anyone lucky enough to receive them. Socially you are much sought after because you are the kind of person who makes a party "go"—who can circulate around a room with a pleasant, friendly word for everyone, never at a loss for conversation, never hid¬ing in a corner waiting to be entertained.
Being mutable as well as airy, you are adaptable to any environment and will be at home wherever you go, in whatever kind of company. Gemini rules the nervous system, and your senses are unusually acute; it also rules the conscious mind, and your intelligence responds im¬mediately to what the senses convey to it. The combin¬ation results in a person who can sense almost at a glance what people want and, using his gift for words, can present a proposition in the way that other people want to hear it. These qualities make Gemini people excellent salesmen, advertising executives or promoters.
Of course you have the faults that are the other side of your good qualities. Gemini is a "double" sign, and in everything you do you fluctuate between one side and the other, often not quite sure which side to choose. You are the person for whom the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and you can sometimes overlook an opportunity looming right in front of you be¬cause you wish you were somewhere else, doing some¬thing else. You can find it hard to concentrate on any¬thing long enough to finish it, with the result that other people profit by a good idea you've started, while you are oft on a new interest which may or may not be worthwhile.
In order to achieve the success you long for, it is nec¬essary for you to do either of two things: find a kind of work that allows scope for the constant change you like, or cultivate persistence and determination, and leam to put up with some routine if that is what is needed to complete a project you have started. Routine, unfortu¬nately, is part of most worthwhile accomplishment.
Unlike most people, you are capable of doing two things at once and doing both well. Ihis is something to remember if you find yourself stuck in a routine job; you can start a little business of your own on the side, or be¬come immersed in a hobby that allows you the change and variety you like. Gemini people are clever with their hands and their minds and also, in their own way, very practical; it is entirely possible for you, while working as a secretary or a bank clerk in the daytime, to be a writ¬er, artist, carpenter, toy maker or dress designer in your spare time, either for your own enjoyment or for profit.
And remember, there must be a Gemini quality in every executive if he is to succeed. He must be able to see the big picture as well as the details that make it up; he must be adaptable, able to sense public opinion and respond to it. An Aries may start something new, a Tau¬rus may fight his way through all sorts of obstacles and disappointments till the new idea is accepted; but it takes the Gemini ability to change with the tides of public opinion to keep the new idea going and to make the necessary alterations when public opinion shifts.
On the other hand, the Gemini versatility and ability to shift with the tides does produce a certain superficiali ty. You have an excellent mind and are always intef ested in learning, but you are inclined to leap to conclu sions. You often do not have the patience to investigat a subject deeply; and you are all too apt to make u your mind according to surface appearances. Being a excellent debater, you can present such rational argi; ments, based on your superficial knowledge, that othe people will tend to go along with you—but the mere fac that you have won an argument does not prove that yo are right.
The United States national chart has Gemini rising and a great many Gemini qualities are evident in ou national behavior. The inventiveness, ingenuity and vuj satiliry of Gemini are what have made this country d< velop so quickly; the superficiality of our thinking, espe cially in foreign affairs, is what has kept the Unite States from developing any really sound and consister policy.
Superficiality and inconsistency are the main faults d Gemini in their personal lives too. You are delightful a a party, but you are not the staunch friend who will sej someone through thick and thin. You do not judge c criticize, but you are interested in others only as the are part of the crowd you run around with. If someon drops out, through illness or otherwise, you make n special effort to keep in touch. As a matter of fact yo hate the unpleasant and run from it, and though yo have no wish to be cruel you may be so, unconscious!; because you will abandon anyone who gets into a real] distressing situation.
If there is anything you can do to help you will do i even forgetting your own interests to come to the aid a friend. At worst you can be an interfering busybod sticking your nose into situations where your light vie can only make things worse; but at your best you can b tireless in helping other people overcome their problem using all the versatility and ingenuity at your commari with as much enthusiasm as if you were doing it yourself. It is only in the hopeless situations, where no help is possible, that a Gemini will pass by, carefully looking the other way.
The very thing that makes Gemini such a delight at a party is what sometimes makes you such a bad friend over the long pull. You want everything light, gay and frivolous; you have no patience with the dull or depress¬ing. You never let anything really get you down; you have a quip or wisecrack ready for any occasion. If a friend is too dispirited or emotionally overwrought to respond, you leave him and go off to someone who can respond. You have no depth of heart or emotion to un¬derstand the turmoil he may be going through, and if it is going to make you feel bad you want no part of it.
If you yourself have troubles, though, you never suffer in silence or alone; you will talk about your problems to friends, relatives, even acquaintances. It's true that most of the time you go around spreading brightness and cheer, amusement and stimulation. It's true, too, that if someone needs an important letter written, a bookshelf built, a typewriter ribbon changed or any one of count¬less other chores that you can help with, you will happily set to work and fix it. Gemini is the sign of manual and mental dexterity, and usually you are adept at many things; and you have absolutely no objection to being asked to solve someone else's problems along these lines.
But in return you feel that people owe you sympathy, attention, consideration, admiration, time, energy and even financial assistance. After all, you reason, you're willing to help them, so they should be equally willing to help you by letting you be the center of their atten¬tion.
You love being in the very center of things—not neces¬sarily the leader, but the person around whom everyone else revolves. With your great versatility, this is often possible, since people need to call on your services or to accept the services you offer. If someone comes along who steals the stage from you, you tend to resent it and, since you are never silent about how you feel, you will tell everyone about it. But your way of expressing your resentment is likely to be as amusing as anything else you say; you take nothing very seriously, even your own resentments or disappointments.
This lightness of touch is one of your most charming qualities. You may get irritated but you rarely get angry; and you never hold a grudge. To you, hardly anything is important enough to get angry about, and you will run from anyone who insists on taking things too seriously, who sulks, quarrels or creates scenes. You are not de¬liberately a peacemaker, as Libra is, but you can often relieve tension or prevent a scene by just the right hu¬morous comment at the right time. Because of this you are pleasant company, and probably no group could function amicably without some people of your sign to keep it from getting bogged down.
In fact, it is your true function in life to bring variety, interest, comfort and convenience to all those around you. With your constant search for diversity and amuse¬ment, you bring a quality of childlike excitement to the rest of the world; you stimulate, refresh and revive oth¬ers who are too much creatures of habit. At its best, this quest for novelty can also do more important things, like stimulating inventiveness in science, literature or art. The whole field of aviation is considered as being under Gemini rulership, and the modern space program is a typical Gemini conception. You are constantly reaching for new areas to visit, new people to communicate with.
Even if most Geminis now living will never reach the Moon, you are willing to settle for something more earthy as long as it involves travel. You love to wander -maybe not too far, but you want to be on the go. This is part of your love for circulating, as freely as air does; it would be unbearable to you to be too confined, never to be able to get around, see things and learn things that stimulate your agile mind and give it new ideas to work on. You rarely find traveling tiresome, no matter how in convenient or uncomfortable it may be; you are so ab¬sorbed in the novelty of it and the people you meet along the way that you are not likely even to notice the inconveniences.
Even at home you are constantly moving—from one interest to another, from one group of people to another, from one residence or one job to another. You are some¬times accused of using people up and discarding them as soon as they fail to provide you with mental stimula¬tion and surprises; certainly loyalty is not one of your conspicuous virtues. Yet, being a mutable sign, you tend to go away from and return to the same place, person or job, in a pendulumlike motion; and if people are under¬standing and don't try to cling when you wander off, you will probably return at some later time and resume the relationship.
You are equally capable of leaving and later returning to an invention you are working on, a hobby project, a book you are trying to write or any other creative en¬deavor. This apparently erratic course may seem totally disorganized to other people but it often works better for you than struggling along with the project after you have temporarily lost interest. Of course, you should try to avoid carrying this trait so far that you never concen¬trate on anything long enough to finish it.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES
Gemini people are highly adaptable and can adjust to almost any job except one that consists of a monotonous repetition of the same chore day after day. Work that al¬lows variety and change, especially if it involves commu¬nication, travel and a chance to use your quick, logical mind, is ideal. Newspaper reporter, teacher, lecturer and radio or TV announcer are typical Gemini occupations.
The world's best salesmen are Gemini people; no other sign can equal your quickness at sensing a change in another person's attitude and shifting your tactics to meet the new situation. This applies both in personal selling and in such large-scale selling fields as advertis¬ing, public relations,, publicity and promotion. Your adaptability and your quickness of hand and mind can also make you an excellent secretary, typist or telephone operator; you meet the public easily and can be a recep¬tionist, diplomat or doctor. And no one can beat you as a commercial writer or ghost writer, of the kind who can write on any subject in any style that the occasion requires.
Gemini's rulership over transportation leads many of your sign to find their vocations as airline pilots, bus drivers and train conductors. Any job connected with an agency of communication is also under Gemini's ruler-ship: post office clerk, mail carrier and messenger, for in¬stance.
You are manually as well as mentally agile, but your agility is of the delicate rather than the muscular kind. Watch repairing is a typical Gemini field. You may also be a specalist in some branch of communications: an acoustics expert or handwriting analyst, for instance. And the whole field of invention that deals with doing routine jobs faster and easier is yours. The person who first thought of automation must have been a Gemini, since you have no patience with routine chores and feel that they should be done by machines, not human beings with, hopefully, intelligence enough to do some¬thing less monotonous.
HEALTH
Gemini people are quick and wiry rather than sturdy, and live on their nervous energy. You have an immense capacity to keep going as long as your interest is stimu¬lated, but you will begin to feel tired as soon as you are bored. This characteristic can be bad for you, since in an emergency you can keep going for twenty-four hours without stopping and then collapse; no one could go on forever without rest, but you hardly notice the need of it while your mind is occupied.
You should make it your business to get the proper rest and relaxation. Make a real effort to avoid doing, thinking or reading anything exciting before you go to bed, or you will have trouble sleeping. Try also to get relaxation during the day when you are hard at work, even if only by an occasional trip to the water cooler and a chat with a colleague. With a Gemini this is not laziness but the opposite; with too continuous overstimu-lation your nerves will get tied up in knots and you will be unable to work at all, whereas an occasional break will give you a chance to unwind and attack the work with fresh zest when you return.
Physical exercise and travel are always relaxing to a Gemini. You never like to sit still for long, and after a hard day's work at a desk or a machine you need to move around. You are not the kind of person who says he is too tired at night even to get up and turn on the TV; you may turn it on, but you will be too restless to sit and watch it. When you are tired you will find a long walk, a change of scene, new people to talk to, repairing something around the house or getting absorbed in a hobby that is completely different from your daytime work more relaxing than sitting still.
Gemini rules the arms and shoulders and the lungs, and if you fail to live a balanced life you may have trou¬ble in these areas. But your greatest health problem is nervous tension, which must be guarded against if you are to avoid countless other physical difficulties, both real and imaginary.
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
Your greatest difficulty in love and marriage is that you tire so easily of people and interests and need con¬tinuous novelty and mental stimulation. Whereas people of another sign might put up with—or even enjoy—a marriage that was solid and substantial but unexciting, with you when the mental stimulation is gone love flies out the window. Yours is a "double" sign, and two or more marriages are possible, even likely.
In any case, you are light, intellectual and imaginative rather than passionate. You will run from any marriage partner who is too demonstrative, demanding, jealous or restrictive; you will simply walk away from an emotional tantrum or a violent quarrel and may never come back. You can be held lightly, with continual interest and mental inspiration, or not at all.
An individual horoscope is necessary to determine the proper marriage partner for any particular person, but generally speaking you would find your most suitable mates in the other Air Signs, Libra and Aquarius, who can match you in sociability, adaptability and originality of ideas, or in the Fire Signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, who will add enthusiasm and warmth to set fire to your imagination.
With the Water Signs, Cancer, Scorpio-and Pisces, there is a possibility that a Gemini man can make a good match with a Cancer woman, since she will keep his home elegantly and will make him the center of her life—which Gemini always enjoys. The combination does not work quite as well in the other direction; a Cancer man may want more in the way of settled home life than a Gemini woman is willing to give. With either sex, avoid a marriage with Pisces, who is too demanding emotionally; avoid at all costs an alliance with Scorpio, whose jealous, passionate, possessive, vindictive and in¬articulate nature is the very antithesis of Gemini's light emotions and continual chatter.
The Earth Signs Capricorn and Taurus would probably interest Gemini very little, so there is not much chance of making the mistake of such a marriage. The danger here is the third Earth Sign, Virgo, which, like Gemini, is Mercury ruled and therefore has a superficial resem¬blance to Gemini. These two could attract each other mentally, and, both being ruled by reason and intelli¬gence, there would probably be no violent scenes be¬tween them. But there would be continual bickering and argument—both being mutable and therefore talkative— as Virgo tried to get Gemini to consent to Virgo's perfec¬tionist ideas and the drudgery necessary to attain them.
