VIRGO
August 24-September 23 Birthdays
Birthstone: Sapphire
Best day: Wednesday Element: Earth Type: Mutable
In the chart of a country the sign Virgo rules the common people, and you born under this sign are inclined to think of yourself as rather ordinary. Modest and shy, never the kind to blow your own horn, you consistently underestimate your importance to the world. Always remember that without your common sense and hard work and your talent for handling details accurately, every operation in the business world would gradually come to a standstill, entangled in hopeless confusion
If such a situation ever did happen, you would thoroughly enjoy stepping in to clean up the mess—not to prove how important you are (which wouldn't even occur to you) but because you like nothing better than to bring order out of confusion. One of your greatest joys is to tadde a really mixed-op situation that presents a challenge to your excellent mind and exceptional talent for taking something apart and putting it back together better than it ever was before. If you go to work in an office where nothing has been filed accurately for the past twenty years, in a few days you will have the files reorganized—widi neatly typed labels on the file drawers, yet! And you will get a great deal of quiet satisfaction from the fact that it took you to do the job right.
This feeling is not conceit but your natural perfectionism. You want everything done just so, and you have learned from past experience that few people will go to the trouble to do things to your satisfaction. You are calm, careful, conscientious, able to get along well with other people—all qualities that would fit you for an executive position. The one thing that often holds you back is your perfectionism; you hate to delegate work because you are sure that no one wifl do it as well as you can.
You're right, too, as far as detail or routine work goes; where you sometimes. fall down is in imagination or breadth of scope. Not all jobs can best be done by meticulous attention to detail; some require a broader view. You must train yourself to look up from your work occasionally and observe the total picture around you— which, with your fine intelligence, you are well able to comprehend. When you have learned to do this you will be well on the way to success.
You are not doomed to toil all your lif e unappreciated, however. Sooner or later your quiet worth will be recognized and you will get ahead without pushing very hard to do so. You can also be very successful in a small business of your own. The neatest, brightest shop in your neighborhood, with the cleverest displays of stock and the cleanest shelves, is probably owned by a Virgo.
Nor are you likely to be underpaid for long; either. Virgo is an Earth Sign, with the practicality of all the Earth Signs, and your respect for a job well done makes you fed that "the worker is worthy of his hire." Un-aggressive in most ways, you wiH fight for a decent salary—maybe not only for yourself but for all the other workers in your company. Virgo-bom Labor leader Walter Eeuther is an example of this kind of down-to-earth Virgo thinking.
Walter Reuther is an example of another facet of the Virgo personality, too—your ideal of practical service to humanity. You like and respect work for its own sake, but actually you get your greatest satisfaction from being able to do things for other people rather than for yourself. This service often takes the form of welfare work among the poor or handicapped—which, with your Earth Sign ability to face the facts of Me, you are better equipped to do than some signs whose ideals are humanitarian but who shrink from the ugliness of reality.
Since Virgo rules health as well as work, your humanitarian service often becomes a vocational indicator for you; a great number of doctors and nurses are born under your sign. But even if you do not deal with health professionally, you usually like to keep up on developments in medicine. Since you are never slow to criticize or to give advice, the friends of a Virgo are often treated to well-meaning lectures on why they shouldn't do thus and so because it's bad for their health.
Ton are especially concerned about proper diet—and again, you are likely to tsk-tsk rather audibly if you dine with a friend who insists on overeating, or who skips the healthful main course in favor of a rich dessert. For your own part, you are always careful of the way you eat, and are inclined to eat slightly less than enough rather than too much. Because of this interest in food and your discriminating taste, you are often a gourmet and also— whether you are a man or a woman—a good cook Virgo husbands are sometimes die despair of their wives because of their careful eating habits—and also because, if they criticize a dish and are told to "make it yourself if you're so fussy," they will do it , and better than the wife did.
Your attention to detail and discriminating taste are not limited to work and to food. In any of the arts, especially literature, you are a discerning and sensitive critic. You are, however, inclined sometimes to notice details almost as much as the concept of the whole work. The story is told of a Virgo who stood gating at a masterpiece in an art museum for half an hour and then turned away in disappointment because he had noticed that the brushwork in one corner was a little less careful than in the rest of the painting.
All your senses are acute; you are the land who can listen to a symphony orchestra and hear each of the instruments individually as well as the composition as a whole. Your sense of touch is well developed, too; in particular, you like comfortable shoes, because you are more aware than most of a binding instep or a blister-producing tight heel. You may be the first to notice a whiff of smoke, or the change of a woman's perfume, because your sense of smell is as acute as your other senses.
This sensitivity extends to your entire environment, causing you to notice weather changes more acutely than other people do. Since you are one of the more vocal signs, you may be one of those who talks about the weather a lot If yon have some physical ailment that is aggravated by weather changes—rheumatism or sinus trouble, for instance—you can notice these changes almost before they happen. You notice a draft, too, the minute a window or door is opened. And because of your concern for health, you will be among the first to complain of any change that bothers you.
Your constant noticing of details and your discriminating taste can also make you a well-meaning but sometimes irritating critic of your family and friends. A speck of dust, an untidy room or a spot of dirt on the tablecloth will not escape your eye. And while you don't in-

and your fove far neatness and order, you usuaDy dress well but not ostentatiously. Your car, your home and your other possessions are similarly in good taste but not flashy. When shopping you like to get full value for your mosey.
With all these sober qualities, you are not lacking in a sense of humor. You like a good joke and for all your rather prissy fussiness in other areas, you are an Earth Sign and accept the facts of Hie as calmly and matter-of-facth/ as you accept any other facts.
Being an Earth Sign, too, you prefer the simple Me, even farm Me. You like working with the soil and are likely to have at least a windowbox garden if you do not have room for anything else. The one thing you are somewhat proud of is your intelligence, but you are no cocktail-party wit as the other Mercury-ruled sign, Gemini, is inclined to be. You are not usually a very good "mixer" anyway, but your dislike of the sophisticated big city routine stems from your natural simplicity. You have been sponsoring back-to-the-soil movements ever since people started moving away from the farms and small towns.
This same simplicity also applies to your feeling about people. You are inclined to treat everyone alike, from bank presidents to delivery boys. To you the true aristocracy is that of the worker; you admire someone who does a good job more than you do someone who is rich or social but has achieved his position by inheritance rather than by working for it. In the place where you work, you are inclined to choose your associates among those who have the same conscientious attitude toward their work as you do.
Being a mutable sign, you enjoy having relationships with a wide variety of people. You usually are able to form many intimate and durable friendships, mostly on the basis of intellectual compatibility, with people who appreciate your common-sense practicality and unassuming simplicity. You lean toward those who for onereason or another need the help you are always so willing to give; Virgo has a special affinity toward those who are handicapped in some way. You are a talker and you enjoy giving advice; in fact you are so much of a talker that sometimes it is hard for you to wait until the other person has finished telling you his problem before you begin giving the advice. Modest as you are, it gives you pleasure to be considered helpful, in fact something of an expert in the field in which you are being consulted.
CAREER POSSIBILITIES
You are curious and enjoy collecting facts about everything under the sun; and you have a facility for expressing yourself in words. These qualities fit you very well for any job where a wide range of information and tlie capacity to communicate it are helpful: editor, writer or teacher, for instance.
Your accuracy and precision and your love for details make yon suited to a wide range of office jobs, primarily those dealing with the mathematics which your Earth Sign practicality enjoys. You can make an excellent statistician, accountant or bookkeeper. You also function happily as a file clerk, typist, office manager, billing clerk or purchasing agent. Secretary is a very good job for you since it allows you to be of direct service to your boss while also using many of your other skills, such as attention to details, typing and so forth.
Your interest in health and in practical helpfulness make you a natural for many medical professions: doctor, nurse, dentist, dietician or some job where you have the responsibility for keeping the facilities clean and sterile. This attention to cleanliness and order also makes you an excellent housekeeper, or makes you well suited to run a supply room of any kind—a department store warehouse, for instance, or a factory toolroom.
The fields that call for interest in people and in giving helpful advice might be right for you: social worker or employment counselor, for instanceYou also have a real talent for discrimination and criticism, which can be used constructively as a critic in one of the artistic fields, an efficiency expert or a consultant in any field where systems, duties or physical facilities are rearranged to make them more orderly and efficient.
Mercury rules commerce as well as communicaton, and you are well suited to be, for instance, a department store executive, or to be self-employed with a shop of your own. If you do own a shop, your meticulous attention to detail and cleanliness, your cleverness at getting the best of a bargain and your willingness to work long, hard hours can make you extremely successful.
HEALTH
You are somewhat likely to be rather sickly as a child (though not as much so as Capricorn) but when you have survived this stage you rarely have any major health problems. In fact, you may be one of those lucky people who never know a day's illness in your life beyond a cold or some other such minor ailment.
In this respect your way of life is a great help. You like to live a rather simple, orderly, regular life, and this —as you probably know well, because of your interest in all matters connected with health—is the best kind for avoiding serious illness. You are naturally inclined to be thin, and you help this along, too, by attention to proper eating habits. If anything, you eat too little rather than too much, though your calm, even disposition keeps you from getting as frhin as the nervous types—Gemini, for instance—are inclined to be.
Overindulgence of any kind does not especially appeal to you, so you are spared the problems that this brings on. You have too much sense to "bum the candle at both ends," wearing out your strength and your health by constant activity. You like to work, but for you there is a definite limit beyond which you are not willing to go.
Virgo rules the bowels and, through Mercury, the hings and nervous system; you must be careful of disorders of these organs. But to say this is almost superfluous, since you are always careful about your health. In fact, you often worry when there is no need to do so, since your approach to life protects you from a great many of the health problems that bother less abstemious people.
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
In some ways you make an excellent husband or wife; you are "domesticated" to start with, naturally inclined to order, routine and responsiblity. The restrictions of marriage do not inhibit you since you have long since accepted the restrictions required by your work. You are not, in any case, inclined to restlessness and to much social gadding about.
Your trouble comes from your perfectionist ideals and your tendency to complain out loud if everything around the house is not kept just the way you want it, or there is not enough orderly routine in the way the household is run. You are more than willing to help set things right now and then, but you may be somewhat irritable with a marriage partner who persists in ignoring your ideas of how things should be done. (Your partner, of course, is quite as likely to get irked by your fussiness and complaining.)
Your love is deep and steady but it is not demonstrative. You present a calm, unemotional surface, not easily aroused to anger, and you are cooperative about handling domestic affairs—all of which make for an easygoing marriage with a partner who is at least moderately suitable. You dislike scenes and avoid violent quarrels, though you may be inclined to bicker and argue when there is a point yon want to pot across. You shun the idea of divorce, which disturbs your orderly routine.
An individual horoscope is necessary to determine the proper marriage partner for any particular person, but generally speaking you would find your most suitable mates in the other Earth Signs, Capricorn and Taurus, who can understand and appreciate your practical, down-to-earth attitude, or the Water Signs, Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, who can add humanness and warmth to your emotional detachment
With the Air Signs, you can get along reasonably well with Libra, who shares your passion for order and adds beauty and love to tone down your purely intellectual fault finding. Aquarius shares your ideals of service to humanity, and Gemini shares your Mercury rulership, but neither of these are compatible with your interest in purely mundane detail The Fire Signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, would disturb you with their impulsiveness and sudden enthusiasms, which would be contrary to your carefully organized way of life.
